Following the army's takeover of his government and an house arrest, Zimbabwean President, Robert Mugabe has finally succumbed to pressure and resigned from office.
The resignation followed the commencement of impeachment proceedings on Tuesday.
Mr. Mugabe who has been in power since the country's independence in 1980 was ousted as a leader by his ruling party ZANU-PF on Sunday and was expected to announce his resignation. He was given 24 hours to resign as president or face impeachment.
The 93 year old was however adamant. He announced in his national broadcast to the nation that he would remain in power.
Mr Mugabe surprisingly turned a new leaf hours after the commencement of his impeachment proceedings.The house went on frenzy when the speaker,Jacob Mudenda announced Mugabe's resignation later on Tuesday. Mudenda reads as the the former president had written:
I Robert Gabriel Mugabe in terms of section 96 of the constitution of Zimbabwe hereby formally tender my resignation ... with immediate effect
