7 Tips to turn an old Chair into a new One

LIFESTYLE.

Regardless if you have an antiquated chair in your home that is a known eyesore, or you have recently gotten into do-it-yourself projects with antiques, you can give your old chair a face lift in very little time. With a few small changes, you can give your old chair a whole new lease of life and make it a feature piece in your home, a talking point at parties  and a comfortable place to relax. There are some fantastic sources of inspiration online where you can get ideas and easily transform your chair into something truly unique, no matter what your budget.

Here are seven great tips to help you breathe new life into your old chair.

1. Accessorize

One of the simplest ways to bring back beauty to an old chair is to change the environment in which it lives. One way to accomplish this is by adding new curtains and drapes to your rooms. Curtain fabric is easy to find and is relatively inexpensive. You can also change light fixtures, which will modify the way the light shines on the chair, as well as adding new wall hangings or colour to the walls behind the piece.

2. Reupholster

An excellent way to take back the beauty of your furniture is to reupholster your worn, old chair. Reupholstering an item is a great way to bring new life to it. The most important criteria in reupholstering furniture is the fabric selection. Always consider the function of the chair. Will it be used daily, only in the sitting room, or will it never be used and is only a piece to admire?

Once you know the function, you can consider the type of fabric you want to use as well as the amount of fabric you will need. In addition, if a repeating pattern is used, consider purchasing another half a yard of fabric to your estimate.

3. Paint

Paint can do wonders for an old chair.

If you want to make it more relaxed, paint it a white hue with a touch of colour. Make sure to remove the cushions or fabric from the chair. If you are not able to, cover the area with plastic to protect it.

Make sure you prepare the surface to be painted by sanding it with coarse sandpaper. This allows the paint to adhere to the surface better and prevent peeling and flaking in the future. Then paint your selected colour in as many layers as necessary. After thoroughly drying, remove the plastic and start using your fresh new chair!

4. Steam Cleaning

If your older chair has delicate fabric and is in need of a makeover, a steam cleaning may be the way to go. Steam cleaning is essential to remove stains, grease, dirt, mould, viruses, and allergens from your delicate and fragile fabrics. Steam cleaning will breathe new life into your chair by bringing back its beauty after years of muted colours and dusty fabric!

5. Cushions

Another great way to bring new life to an old chair is to replace the cushions. If you have stains or a worn spot from where you always sit, it is time for new cushions. An inexpensive and easy way to makeover an old chair is to replace your current worn out stained cushions with new fluffy, comfortable, supportive cushions.

6. Add or Replace Legs

An interesting way to spice up an old chair is to give it new legs!

If your chair is starting to become out of style or a bit old for your likening, you can change it up by replacing the current legs with a more modern style. You can add new legs to elevate the chair or replace the current legs to add drama and character to the piece.

7. Stain

Staining a chair can be a fun and enduring process. Staining is another great way to breathe new life into an older chair or chairs. Chairs made of wood are very durable and have much character. Due to their function, chairs get worn over time and become dull and lifeless. You can bring the beauty back by refinishing it with a new stain.

Staining is relatively simple and requires cleaning of the wood, drying thoroughly, stripping the old finish off, sanding the item for the new stain to adhere better, wiping the piece down to remove any sanding dust, and applying the new stain colour with a staining sponge. Your chair will have a great new colour and look!

Sit Back and Enjoy

No matter your budget, how much time you have or your DIY skill level, you can bring your old chair back to life with ease. Whether you choose to stain, paint, or stylise your old chair is up to you. Just be sure to take some time to consider the condition of the chair, where in the house it will live and how much use it will get.

By taking these points into account, you can choose the best way to revive your old chair so that it looks amazing now and into the future. Then, just sit back, relax and enjoy your new, one-of-a-kind chair
